Ports of Oman
Oman's ports range from the Salalah container hub — one of the busiest box terminals in the Indian Ocean — to the small dhow port at Khasab. Cruise ships dock at Sultan Qaboos in Mutrah and at Salalah.
Overview
Salalah
Indian Ocean transhipment hub run by APM Terminals. Outside the Strait of Hormuz so insurance-friendly for vessels avoiding the gulf chokepoint. Cruise terminal is shared with the container port; cruise berths are 5 km west of the city centre.
Sohar
Joint venture between the Omani government and the Port of Rotterdam. Containers, bulk and petrochemicals. The associated Free Zone has driven Sohar's growth from a small fort town to a city of 200,000.
Duqm
Centrepiece of the Duqm Special Economic Zone. Deep-water port and the largest dry dock in the region. Strategic value: outside the Strait of Hormuz, on the open Arabian Sea.
