Airports of Oman
Oman has six civilian airports, with Muscat (MCT) and Salalah (SLL) handling more than 95 percent of passenger traffic. Khasab is the only practical alternative to driving through the UAE to reach the Musandam exclave.
Overview
Muscat International (MCT)
Hub of Oman Air. Full long-haul carrier service including Etihad, Emirates, Lufthansa, British Airways, Qatar Airways. 30 km west of central Muscat, 25-minute drive in normal traffic. Mwasalat shuttle bus to Ruwi runs every 30 minutes for 500 baisa.
Salalah (SLL)
Second-largest airport. Year-round Oman Air daily to Muscat, plus seasonal Gulf Air, Air India Express, FlyDubai and seasonal European charters during khareef (late June–early September). 5 km from Salalah city centre.
Khasab (KHS)
Only practical way into the Musandam exclave without crossing the UAE. Oman Air operates short hops from Muscat (1.5 hours, propellor aircraft). Schedules are seasonal — confirm before booking onward.
Practical tips
- Muscat airport has the best visa-on-arrival queue in the Gulf — typically 10–15 minutes. Use the e-visa portal in advance to skip it entirely.
- Salalah airport rental cars sell out completely during khareef. Book months ahead for August.
- Khasab flights are weather-sensitive; rebook flexibility is wise.
