Forts and Castles of Oman

Oman has more than 500 documented fortifications — round mountain towers, square mud-brick castles, Portuguese harbour forts. The 30-odd that are restored and open to visitors are mapped below, with current opening hours, entry fees and access notes.

Overview

Why Oman has so many forts

From the 9th to the 19th century, Oman's interior was governed by an elected imam in Nizwa while the coast was contested by Persians, Portuguese and Ottomans. Every wadi entrance, oasis and harbour ended up with a fort. After independence in the 1970s most were derelict; a methodical restoration programme since the early 1990s has reopened the major ones as monuments and museums.

UNESCO World Heritage forts

The fort at Bahla and its 12 km of oasis walls were inscribed in 1987 — the only fortification in Oman with World Heritage status in its own right. Several others (Nizwa, Jabrin) are protected as part of the wider Oman cultural landscape and are on the tentative list.

How long forts stay open

Standard hours for restored forts are Saturday–Thursday 9:00–16:00, Friday morning only (8:00–11:30 typically). Some smaller forts close one weekday. Entry is 500 baisa for most sites and 5 OMR for the showcase Nizwa fort. Always carry small change.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the most impressive fort in Oman?

If you have time for one fort it should be Nizwa — the 30-metre circular tower is unique in the Arab world and the museum inside the fort is the best-curated. If you have time for two, add Bahla for its UNESCO status and pre-Islamic foundations.

Can you go inside Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts in Muscat?

Al Jalali is closed to general visitors as it is used by the Royal Office. Al Mirani is also closed. Both are clearly visible from the corniche between the Sultan's Palace and Mutrah.

Are the forts open during Ramadan?

Yes, but with reduced hours — typically 9:00–13:00 only, no afternoon session. Confirm at the ticket gate as opening varies by fort and year.

Is there a combined ticket?

No. Each fort sells its own ticket and they are individually inexpensive. There is no national heritage pass.
