Beaches of Oman

Oman has 3,165 km of coastline, almost all of it open. The named beaches below are the ones with formal access roads and either decent facilities or specifically appealing wild stretches.

Overview

Beach access in Oman

All Omani beaches are public. There are no fees, no closures, and no private resort sections that exclude pedestrians. Camping is permitted on undeveloped beaches, including near hotels — though courtesy applies.

Best beach by region

For Muscat residents the Friday afternoon beach is Yiti or Qantab. For visitors with a 4×4 day, Fins is the canonical pick: turquoise, undeveloped, free camping at the south end. In Dhofar, Mughsail's blowholes and the cliffs west of it are the highlight.

Swimming conditions

The Sea of Oman (north and east coast) is calm and warm year-round. The Indian Ocean coast (Dhofar) develops 1-2 m swell during khareef and most beaches are unsafe for casual swimming July–September. Strong rips occur off Mirbat year-round.

Frequently asked questions

Can women swim in normal swimwear in Oman?

Yes, on tourist beaches and at hotels. On a beach near a village, a t-shirt and shorts is more comfortable. Bikinis are normal at Fins and the southern Dhofar beaches.

Are there sharks in Oman?

Yes, but reef and pelagic species. There has been one fatal shark attack on a swimmer in modern records (2018). Bull sharks are seen off Mirbat. Risk to swimmers is very low in practice.

Where is the best swimming beach near Muscat?

Yiti and Qantab are the locals' choices. The Crowne Plaza beach in Qurum is the easiest beach inside the city itself.

Can I camp on a beach for free?

Yes, on any beach without explicit signage. Bring everything you need; there are no facilities at most spots.
