Nizwa

Former capital of the Omani imamate, Nizwa sits in a date-palm oasis below Jebel Akhdar at the entrance to the central Hajar. Its 17th-century circular fort is the most-visited monument in the country.

The fort

Nizwa Fort was built by Imam Sultan bin Saif (r. 1649–1679). The 30 m circular tower is the largest in the Arab world and one of the few of its kind anywhere. Open Saturday–Thursday 9:00–16:00, Friday 8:00–11:30. 5 OMR. Allow 90 minutes.

The souq

Behind the fort. Re-built (sympathetically) in the early 2000s but the silver and weaponry section is still trade rather than tourist. Friday morning is the famous goat market — animal trading from 06:30 in a circular pen near the souq.

Day trips from Nizwa

Bahla Fort and Jabrin Castle are 30 km west; Wadi Damm and Al Hoota Cave are en route to Jebel Shams; Jebel Akhdar is 90 minutes up a 4×4-only road from Birkat al-Mawz, 40 km east. Misfat al-Abriyeen — terraced mountain village 15 km off the Bahla road — is the photogenic short trip.

Where to stay

Most travellers use Nizwa as a one-night stop between Muscat and Jebel Shams. The Falaj Daris and Golden Tulip are the standard 3-star options. For something more substantial, the Anantara on Jebel Akhdar is a 90-minute drive up.

Practical tips

Best time to visit: October–March for the cool season; outside Dhofar, summer months are very hot.
Modest dress is appreciated everywhere outside hotel beaches and pools.
Most monuments are closed Friday morning and reopen at 16:00.

Points of interest

Al Hazm Castle — Built in 1711 by Imam Sultan bin Saif II. Notable for stone construction (rare in Oman), secret passages and the imam's tomb inside the castle.

Al Hoota Cave — 4 km show-cave on the south side of Jebel Shams, with a blind cave-fish species and electric-train access for visitors.

Al Jalali Fort — Portuguese-built (1587) sea fort guarding Muscat harbour. Closed to general public; visible from the corniche.

Al Mirani Fort — Twin to Al Jalali across Muscat harbour, also Portuguese-built. Closed to public but a fixture of every Muscat harbour view.

Bahla Fort — UNESCO-listed mud-brick fortress, the oldest surviving fort in Oman with sections from the pre-Islamic Banu Nabhan dynasty. Surrounded by 12 km of oasis walls.

Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn — UNESCO Bronze-Age necropolis (3rd millennium BC) of beehive tombs, towers and a settlement near Ibri. The Al-Ayn skyline tombs are the most photogenic.

Ibra — Gateway to the Wahiba Sands and the wadis of the eastern interior. Known for its women's souq held every Wednesday.

Ibri — Trading town between the desert and the Hajar mountains, near the UNESCO archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn.

Jabrin Castle — Late-17th-century palace-fort built by Imam Bil'arub bin Sultan as a residence and seat of learning. Famous for its painted ceilings and astronomical inscriptions.

Muscat — Capital of Oman, set between the Hajar mountains and the Gulf. Home to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Royal Opera House and the old harbour districts of Mutrah and Muttrah.

Nakhal Fort — Pre-Islamic foundation perched on an outcrop above the Batinah plain, with hot springs at Ain A'Thawwarah at the foot of the hill.

Wadi Al Hawqayn — Easy-access wadi between Rustaq and Al Hamra with shallow pools and small waterfalls during the wet season.

Wadi Bani Awf — Spectacular 4x4 route through the Western Hajar, including the Snake Canyon and Bilad Sayt village. Requires high-clearance vehicle.

Wadi Bani Khalid — Year-round pools fed by springs. Closest accessible wadi to Wahiba Sands; the lower pools are landscaped with paths and a restaurant.

Wadi Damm — Quiet wadi south of Jebel Shams with deep, clear bathing pools tucked into a side gorge. Pre-Islamic beehive tombs nearby on the ridge.

Wadi Mibam — Lesser-known wadi inland from Tiwi with deep emerald pools, popular with cliff jumpers.

Wadi Shab — The most celebrated wadi in Oman. A 45-min hike upstream leads to a series of pools and a hidden waterfall reached by swimming through a slot in the rock.

Wadi Tiwi — Steep, narrow wadi 5 km north of Wadi Shab. Passable by 4x4 to several villages perched among falaj-irrigated terraces.

When is the Friday goat market?

Friday morning, starting around 06:30. By 9:30 it is over. The market is in a paved circular pen near the souq.

Is Nizwa Fort the same as Bahla Fort?

No — they are different forts 35 km apart. Both are major sites; Nizwa is the more impressive single building, Bahla is UNESCO-listed and historically older.

Can I drive to Jebel Akhdar from Nizwa?

Yes, but the Diana viewpoint road from Birkat al-Mawz is 4×4-only, enforced at a police checkpoint. 2WD vehicles will be turned back.

How long should I plan in Nizwa?

One full day is enough for the fort, souq and a quick visit to Bahla. Two days lets you add Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams as an out-and-back.
